Are WoW Raid Bosses too Hard?

Caught a post today on Tobald’s MMO blog, asking if Final Fantasy XI Raid Bosses are too hard. So I thought I’d ask the same question about World of Warcraft raiding.

Now, I’ve never played FF XI, but the poster and commenters seem pretty adamant about some of those bosses. Some seemed to feel they were there to keep people from “finishing” the game and then quitting.

It does seems to me that going 3 years without a kill is a bit much, but what do I know? 😉

The WoW bosses, tough as they may be (and I’m talking about the 25 and 40 man raids,) are killable with certain strategies, though they will provide boxes full of wipes until that point.

Are they too easy? Too hard? Should there be some that are only killable by the Elite Guilds? Should a well disciplined PUG (Pick Up Group) be able to kill them? Is there any such thing as a well disciplined PUG?

Thoughts?

Here’s my troll DeathKNight with a couple of buddies in the upcoming WoW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

Here’s my pal, the LK himself:

Joana, of Joana’s Horde Guide fame, has been touring the beta with, what else? A hunter. Think he’ll have his Horde leveling guide updated for WotLK when it’s finally released? I do. He’s uploaded some screenies, here

Here are a few more screenies, courtesy of Earnest Cavalli, of Wired Magazine.

Twinking is the fine art of taking your character to levels far beyond what he/she should be able to do at any given level. For example, a Rogue twink, at 19, with 2,000 HP? It’s been done.

The [tag-tec]Warsong Gulch[/tag-tec] Battleground (Capture the Flag) has a level 10-19 bracket. Naturally one wants to be level 19, otherwise rapid doom will happen. Then one needs that little edge over the other 19s…

AzerothNow.com has a killer twinking guide for those level 19 Rogues bent on mayhem and slaughter in Warrsong Gulch (and maybe a duel or three.)

So you’ve done your dailies - everyday, you’ve cleared Heroics and Karazhan for Badges until your eyes bleed, maybe you’re even utterly tired of farming Illidan every week or wiping on Kil’Jaeden. But what now? Level another character? Cancel your subscription until Wrath?

Well, I have your solution: why not create a lvl 19 Twink Rogue? But what is a lvl 19 twink Rogue, you may ask. The simple explanation is that they are characters with the best possible gear for their level (including enchants), whose purpose is PvP, and their playground is the 10-19 bracket of Warsong Gulch Battlegrounds.

Here’s the rest: The Ultimate Guide to Lvl 19 Rogue Twinking

edit: A commenter points us to his twinking guides and I may just make use of his level 39 Warlock guide. Very cool. WoW Twink Guide: 39 Affliction Warlock

There’s an extensive list of WotLK patch notes here. Lots of info on what sort of tweaks might happen to your favorite class(es.)

Of course, since this is the beta test everything will probably change between now and the release date.

So look at it as what they’re playng with now, not what the final version will be.

Wrath of the Kitchen King is in the Oven

We actually have a [tag-tec]World of Warcraft[/tag-tec] product of our own. It’s not a leveling guide, or a gold guide, or a PvP guide… It’s a cookbook. A real world cookbook taking, primarily, WoW recipes (from the WoW cooking system) and making real word dishes.

So yeah, this means you can really eat your Aterac Manna Biscuits while hacking down the opposition in the AV battlegrounds.

It’s the Tauren Chef Cookbook. Check it out if you like to cook or know someone, somewhere, who does. By the way, we have lots of recipes in that book for people who have not yet worked up their cooking skills.

Now, if you hop over to that site you’ll be able to grab a free mini-cookbook that will finally give you something to do with those Murloc eyes that you’ve been collecting and unable to sell on the Auction House.

Now, in honor of the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion, due in November, Gwynne is baking up the expansion to the [tag-del]Tauren Chef Cookbook[/tag-del], Wrath of the Kitchen King.

Now, since Blizzard will probably miss the Early November release date for Wrath, we’re not going to hold ourselves to an exact release date for Kitchen King. Still, we’ll probably release it right around the time that Bliz releases WotLK.

Now, if you like the smell of Beer Basted Boar Ribs in the morning you should probably look into our other blog, The WoW Cookbook every now and then, most of the updates to the book will happen over there.

D’oh! My wife got the beta key!

Now the rest of us are in negotiations with her to access the beta account and start fussing with all the new content.

Maybe ours will arrive soon…

And our lips are sealed.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack

Edit: Just as a reminder, Wrath of the Lich King is bringing:

  • the [tag-tec]Death Knight[/tag-tec] – World of Warcraft’s first Hero class.
  • Quest to level 80, gaining potent new abilities and talents along the way (and the new talents are on the WotLK Talent Calculator.)
  • Learn the craft of spell augmentation with the new Inscription profession
  • Brave the harsh new continent of Northrend, the icy domain of the Lich King.
  • Engage in epic siege warfare, deploying mighty siege engines to lay waste to destructible buildings in your path. The new battlegound uses siege engines.
  • Transform your hero’s look with new character-customization options, including new hairstyles and dances. About damn time.
  • Explore perilous new dungeons filled with some of the deadliest creatures – and greatest treasures – on Azeroth. And within 6 months those lovely paired warglaives, that the few and the proud worked so hard to get, will be nothing special.
  • And the inevitable: much, much more…

Ok, I can’t wait.

Believe it or not, I’am actually most looking forward to the character customization. Silly, I know.

Leveling to 80 and exporing the new PvP areas is a close 2nd. Who knows? Enough practice at this stuff and I might be able to get my arena rating above 1000! Well, maybe. 😉

So what’s the one thing that you are most looking forward to in WotLK?
